CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia (Ticker) -- Maryland hopes to stun
another highly ranked Atlantic Coast Conference foe when it
visits Virginia on Saturday.
Last week, the reeling Terrapins shocked then-No. 5 Florida
State, 20-17, eliminating the Seminoles from the national title
race.
Joel Statham passed for 333 yards and a touchdown and ran for
another score for Maryland (4-4, 2-3 ACC), which collected 387
total yards after managing an average of just 121 during a
three-game losing streak entering the contest.
It was the Terps' first win over a top-five team since 1983.
Virginia (6-1, 3-1), which is in a three-way tie atop the
conference with Miami and Virginia Tech, has not played since a
37-16 win at Duke on October 23.
Alvin Pearman ran for a career-high 223 yards and a touchdown
and Wali Lundy added 82 yards and two scores for the Cavaliers,
who were coming off their sole defeat, a 36-3 blowout loss at
Florida State.
Virginia has not played at home since a 30-20 win over Clemson
on October 7. The 30-day span between home games is the
Cavaliers' longest since a 35-day stretch in 1975.
Maryland, which holds a 39-27-2 all-time advantage in the
series, had lost nine in a row to Virginia between 1992-2000 but
has won two of the last three. Last year, the Terps posted a
27-17 road win over the Cavaliers.
Virginia has won the last six in the series at home since 1992.
