MIAMI (Ticker) -- Either 11th-ranked Virginia Tech or No. 9 Miami will win the Atlantic Coast Conference's automatic BCS bowl berth in its first year in the league when the former Big East Conference rivals meet Saturday at the Orange Bowl.
The Hokies (9-2, 6-1 ACC) can clinch the conference title outright with a victory over the third-place Hurricanes (8-2, 5-2). Second-place Florida State (6-2) already completed its regular season.
If the Hurricanes win, forging a three-way tie atop the conference, the tiebreaker goes to the team with the best BCS mark, which would be Miami.
Next year, when Boston College becomes the 12th member of the ACC, the league will be split into two divisions and have a championship game.
Virginia Tech is coming off a 24-10 triumph over Virginia last week.
Bryan Randall threw a pair of touchdown passes to freshman Josh Hyman and Cedric Humes scored on a 37-yard run with just over five minutes left to cap the scoring in a game that was scoreless at the break.
Miami has been idle since a 52-7 rout of Wake Forest on November 20.
Brock Berlin passed for a career-high 361 yards and four touchdowns in the romp, Miami's second straight win after back-to-back defeats.
Virginia Tech cruised past Miami last year, 31-7, snapping the second-ranked Hurricanes' 39-game regular-season winning streak. Miami had won the previous three meetings.
