No. 19 California (1-0) at Washington (0-1) 3:30 pm EDT
SEATTLE (Ticker) - Tyrone Willingham is still looking for his
first victory as Washington coach. If form holds, he'll get it
this week.
After a disappointing debut against Air Force, Willingham and
the Huskies open their Pac-10 Conference schedule against No. 19
California on Saturday.
Willingham's debut was spoiled by Shaun Carney's one-yard
touchdown run with 34 seconds remaining that capped a
fourth-quarter rally as Air Force posted a 20-17 victory over
Washington in the season opener for both teams.
The Huskies have lost seven in a row overall and eight straight
Pac-10 games. However, Willingham was 7-0 against Cal when he
coached at Stanford from 1995-2001.
Last week, Washington's Isaiah Stanback completed 19-of-27
passes for 242 yards and Louis Rankin ran for 112 for the
Huskies, who were outgained, 425-371.
California has a great player in Marshawn Lynch but is still
searching for a quarterback after its season opener.
A sophomore star in the making, Lynch ran 24 times for a
career-high 147 yards and a touchdown as the Bears pulled away
from Division I-AA Sacramento State, 41-3.
True freshman DeSean Jackson caught a pass for a touchdown and
ran back a punt for a score for Cal (1-0), which had to replace
quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a first-round draft pick by the Green
Bay Packers.
Redshirt freshman Nate Longshore got the start and completed
8-of-11 passes for 131 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
But he broke his left ankle with two minutes left in the first
half and is expected to miss the rest of the regular season.
The battle to replace Longshore is up for grabs between junior
college transfer Joe Ayoob and junior Steve Levy. Ayoob failed
to complete any of his 10 passes last week. Levy connected on a
46-yard touchdown pass to Noah Smith but was just 2-of-7 for 52
yards.
Washington leads the series, 46-35-4, but Cal has won the last
three meetings. Before the Bears began their recent streak, the
Huskies had won 19 in a row.
