No. 13 California (3-0) at New Mexico St (0-3), 10:00 pm EST

Even with some of its players ailing, California's position in the rankings hasn't been hurt.

Having gotten strong contributions from their backups, the 13th-ranked Golden Bears look to remain unbeaten when they visit winless New Mexico State on Friday.

Coach Jeff Tedford's earlier teams may have struggled while being undermanned, but the Bears have built up a wealth of talented reserves who've stepped in without a problem.

"That's not something we worry about with the way we teach and prepare," center Marvin Philip said. "We've got guys who are waiting for that opportunity, and they're ready for it."

Tailback Marshawn Lynch sat out with a broken finger, but Justin Forsett rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns in the first extensive playing time of his career. Two offensive linemen missed the game with concussions, but their young replacements played well.

"We don't even really think about whether we're without Marshawn or whatever," Tedford said. "We have guys who are ready."

Forsett, a sophomore from Texas who ended up at California after Notre Dame backed out of a scholarship commitment, made sure the Bears didn't miss Lynch with an impressive afternoon. Forsett and Marcus O'Keith combined for 256 yards rushing, 69 yards receiving and all four of the Bears' offensive touchdowns.

When Lynch returns, Forsett and O'Keith will go back into a supporting role _ the same role played last season by Lynch, who averaged more than 8 yards per carry as J.J. Arrington's backup.

"I'm not worried about how many times I get the ball," O'Keith said. "I just want to make sure when I'm in there, I'm ready to make plays."

Several defensive contributors have struggled with injuries as well, including linebackers Greg Van Hoesen and Worrell Williams, and sixth-year senior defensive lineman Tosh Lupoi. Cal lost eight defensive starters to graduation, but coordinator Bob Gregory has plugged in plenty of new talent, including impressive linebackers Desmond Bishop and Mickey Pimentel.

"They're young and they're learning, but they're playing hard, and that's all we can ask at this point," Gregory said. "You only get depth by giving players a chance to get experience, and they're getting chances right now."

New Mexico State (0-3) has struggled under first-year coach Hal Mumme.

The Aggies had nothing to counter New Mexico on either side of the ball in a 38-21 loss Saturday.

New Mexico State's defense spent much of the night on the field as New Mexico had the ball for more than 35 minutes.

"We've (defense) got to figure out a way to get ourselves off the field," Aggies defensive back Matt Griebel said. "Otherwise, teams are going to see us on film and just line up and run it all night."

The Aggies did manage to finish with positive yards rushing, totaling 98 after averaging minus-6 yards in their first two games. Justine Buries had 115 yards on 20 carries.

New Mexico State now has a short week to prepare for Friday's game.

"We've got to have a short memory," Aggies linebacker Jimmy Cottrell said. "We have to get over this one real quick."

California has won both meetings between these teams.
