LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- If Texas Tech fans eagerly awaiting the matchup at Texas suffer temporary memory loss about game time, one local television station is at the ready -- every 15 minutes.

Since earlier this week, KAMC-TV has flashed at the bottom of the screen the days, hours and minutes remaining until the 2:30 p.m. Saturday kickoff between the second-ranked Longhorns and the No. 10 Red Raiders.

Tech fans say the game, which is the most significant for the program in three decades and which could ultimately decide the winner of the Big 12 South, is the best chance ever for Tech to earn respect as a top-tier football program.

No wonder this West Texas city is all agog about the game, which is the first time since 1977 that Tech has been involved in a contest matching top-10 teams. That year, Tech was No. 7 and Texas A&M was sixth when the Aggies beat the Raiders 33-17 early in the season.

Most television newscasts this week have led with something about the game, and radio stations aren't far behind. Cash registers are ringing up big sales of Red Raider T-shirts and other garb, including some aimed at Texas.

One red shirt depicts the cartoonish cowboy-hatted Red Raider mascot wrangling a burnt orange Bevo toward the turf in Memorial Stadium and reads "Texas Hold 'em" and below that, "Battle for the Lone Star State." Another has "I (spade) Bevo."

At Red Raider Outfitters across from the university, sales this week have been up as much as 60 percent.

"We've never seen an away game this strong," Tech graduate and store manager Stephen Spiegelberg said. "The student body, they're showing up. They're normally here but not like this."

The store is prepared to roll out shirts with a winning Tech score within hours of the game's end.

A win against the Longhorns in front of a packed stadium in Austin would probably boost Tech's stock in the Bowl Championship Series rankings. The Red Raiders debuted in the thick of the championship chase at No. 7 in the BCS, surprising to some because of a weak nonconference schedule.

Last year, Tech wasn't even a consideration for a BCS bowl but went on to wow many by beating No. 4 California 45-31 in the Holiday Bowl for a third straight postseason win.

Texas, meanwhile, beat Michigan 38-37 in the Rose Bowl.

One must go all the way back to November 1976 to a Southwest Conference game between Tech and Houston in Lubbock to find a game as meaningful to a season. Tech, then No. 5, lost 27-19 to No. 9 Houston, which went on to represent the league in the Cotton Bowl. That was the Red Raiders' only loss before falling to Nebraska 27-24 in the Bluebonnet Bowl.

Texas has won four of five games against Tech since coach Mike Leach arrived in 2000.

"This is a make-or-break game," Tech fan Mark Pettingell said. "If we win, we can build on this. It will definitely help with recruiting."

The Red Raiders have been conference contenders in recent years but have faltered in most big games, like two years ago when they went to Oklahoma with the Big 12 South title on the line.

The Sooners crunched Tech 60-15. That's got junior Manny Rodriquez, much to his chagrin, thinking the worst for his team.

"We'll put points on the board, but I think UT's going to come out a winner in this one," he said. "I hate to say it but Vince [Young] is just going to be too tough to handle on the running game."

Spiegelberg believes Tech has been building on the California win all season, despite playing two Division I-AA schools and not having played a Top 25 team.

"I think the California game set Tech with a good mind-set," he said. "I'll be very surprised if they don't show up. They'll be there, and they'll be ready to play."
