Steve Spurrier has to be drooling a little here. The Vols are scuffling and the Gamecocks could move one step closer to a bowl bid with a win over Spurrier's favorite punching bag.

South Carolina (4-3) at No. 23 Tennessee (3-3), 7:45 pm EDT

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Slumping No. 23 Tennessee will have to get used to playing without Gerald Riggs when it hosts South Carolina in a Southeastern Conference matchup Saturday.

A star senior tailback, Riggs was ruled out for the season on Monday after suffering injuries to his right lower leg and ankle in the fourth quarter in a 6-3 loss at Alabama last week.

Riggs has rushed for 1,893 yards on just 383 carries in his career. Last year, he ran for 1,107 yards despite splitting time with Cedric Houston, who also gained more than 1,000 yards.

"I know Tennessee has outstanding running backs - Gerald Riggs is not the only one they got," first-year Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said. "I'm sure it is not going to change their plan much at all."

With last Saturday's game tied, 3-3, Tennessee was driving for a go-ahead score when fullback Cory Anderson caught a screen pass on 3rd-and-goal from the 15 when he was hit by Alabama's Roman Harper around the 5. The ball came loose and went out of the end zone for a touchback, and the Crimson Tide marched back down the field on won the game on Jamie Christensen's 34-yard field goal with no time left.

Rick Clausen completed 11-of-17 passes for 144 yards for the Vols (3-3, 2-3 SEC East), who have lost back-to-back games since a 27-10 triumph over Mississippi on October 1.

South Carolina (4-3, 2-3 East) is on its first winning streak under Spurrier, having defeated Kentucky on October 8, 44-16, and Vanderbilt last week, 35-28.

The Gamecocks had blown a 28-14 fourth-quarter lead before Blake Mitchell tossed a three-yard touchdown to Sidney Rice with 1:41 remaining. Rice had eight catches for 132 yards and three TDs.

Spurrier's team will be without mobile quarterback Syvelle Newton, who was an effective backup to Mitchell.

South Carolina is just 2-21 all-time against Tennessee, including 0-12 in Knoxville. The Vols have won 12 in a row in the series since a 24-23 loss in Columbia in 1992.
