North Carolina at No. 5 Virginia Tech 7:45 pm EST

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) - After being handed a great opportunity by Miami, Virginia Tech plans on taking advantage.

The fifth-ranked Hokies can clinch a berth in the inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference title game when they host North Carolina on Saturday.

Virginia Tech (9-1, 6-1 ACC Coastal) lost control of the division when it was routed here by Miami, 27-7, on November 5. But the Hurricanes surprisingly were upset at home by Georgia Tech last Saturday, 14-10, to fall a game behind the Hokies with one to play.

The Hokies bounced back from their loss to the Hurricanes with a 52-14 triumph last week at Virginia. Cedric Humes ran for 113 yards and three touchdowns and Branden Ore rushed for 115 yards and two scores for the Hokies, who outgained the Cavaliers, 503-254, including 339-130 on the ground.

With a win over North Carolina, Virginia Tech would face Atlantic Division champion Florida State in the conference title game on December 3 in Jacksonville, Florida. If the Hokies lose, they would need Miami to lose to Virginia at home to back into the championship game.

North Carolina (5-5, 4-3 Coastal), which has alternated losses and wins over its last eight games, is coming off a 24-21 comeback victory over archrival Duke last Saturday.

The Tar Heels trailed, 21-17, after a 24-yard TD run by Ronnie Drummer with just over five minutes remaining. But Ronnie McGill, who rushed for a season-high 146 yards, scored on a three-yard run with 98 seconds left to give North Carolina the lead for good.

North Carolina needs a win to become bowl eligible.

The Hokies held on for a 27-24 victory in Chapel Hill last year, their first as ACC rivals. Mike Imoh rushed for 236 yards and two TDs for Virginia Tech, which survived a missed 54-yard field goal by Connor Barth that would have tied the game with a minute left.
