CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina has shown a knack under coach John Bunting for pulling off important home upsets when the Tar Heels need them the most.

This might qualify: No. 16 Virginia Tech comes to Chapel Hill on Saturday to face a North Carolina team that opened its season with a surprising loss.

The Hokies (1-0) are perfect in eight league road games since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2004, but the Tar Heels (0-1) say they're encouraged by the way they were competitive with Virginia Tech in their past two meetings.

"That's a pretty awesome record (but) it's a team that we've played real tight with for three of four halves," Bunting said. "I'm looking forward to having them down here again."

The Tar Heels have come close to knocking off the Hokies recently, but both times failed to finish.

Virginia Tech won 27-24 two years ago in Chapel Hill, and led only 6-3 at halftime of an eventual 30-3 rout last season in Blacksburg, Va.

North Carolina wanted to start the season strong, hoping to get a boost from its three home games to open the year. A loss to Rutgers in the opener may have tempered those big dreams.

"The one thing you know: You're going to see a much better football team this week than played last week," Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said.

Kenan Stadium has been the site of several noteworthy victories for the Tar Heels under Bunting.

Bunting's first Tar Heels team in 2001 started with three straight losses before they turned their season around with a 41-9 rout of sixth-ranked Florida State.

Two years ago, North Carolina was 3-4 after a lopsided loss at Utah, but a surprising 31-28 win over No. 4 Miami helped propel the Tar Heels to a bowl berth.

And last season, North Carolina bounced back from a blowout loss to the Hurricanes by upsetting No. 19 Boston College in Chapel Hill.

"The resiliency of the players, the leadership at the top of the players had a lot to do with it," Bunting said. "We were at the bottom of the bottom when we left Utah."

If the Tar Heels are going to pull another upset, they'll need to do a better job of stopping the Hokies' offense.

Virginia Tech quarterbacks Bryan Randall and Marcus Vick have made the past two all-ACC teams, and in the Hokies' opener Sean Glennon showed he's capable of succeeding them.

Glennon threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-0 win against Division I-AA Northeastern.

The Tar Heels had trouble stopping the run last week, allowing Rutgers' Ray Rice to rush for 201 yards and three touchdowns.

In Tech's last visit to North Carolina, Mike Imoh rushed for a school-record 243 yards.

"We can't dwell on things that happened in the past," Hokies running back Branden Ore said. "Hopefully we'll get those same results this year."

The Tar Heels hope they have an ace in the hole: Assistant coach Danny Pearman came to Chapel Hill this offseason after spending seven years at Virginia Tech.

Beamer said the Hokies have changed their signals to prevent Pearman from giving his new school an upper hand.

"He knows our personnel, but I'm not sure there's a super advantage," Beamer said.
