RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina State might have come up with a reliable recipe for an upset -- take on a nationally ranked team in a night game at home with Daniel Evans at quarterback.

That formula has worked twice this season, so now the streaky Wolfpack are hoping for the same result when they play host to No. 20 Georgia Tech on Saturday night.

"I like the fact that we (have) Daniel at quarterback, a very important position," N.C. State coach Chuck Amato said. Evans, a redshirt sophomore, "has got games under his belt with success. He is getting better and improving, week-in and week-out."

Now the big questions are whether the suddenly punchless Wolfpack can produce points against the Yellow Jackets' blitz-happy defense and whether they can contain Tech's passing combination of quarterback Reggie Ball and receiver Calvin Johnson, who leads the Atlantic Coast Conference with five catches and 78 yards per game.

Then again, with Johnson drawing so much attention, coach Chan Gailey has devised ways to get other Yellow Jackets involved.

"People are paying so much attention to Calvin that it is allowing other people to be open," Gailey said, citing running back Tashard Choice as an example.

"Choice having a 100 yards in a couple of games is another thing that is grabbing their attention and allowing other guys to be open," Gailey said. "You have to give Reggie some credit. He sees it, they see it upstairs in the booth, they are calling the plays and Reggie is executing it."

The Yellow Jackets (6-2, 4-1) are in control in the Coastal Division and have a relatively easy road to a berth in next month's ACC championship game. They close their conference schedule with games against the three Raleigh-area programs -- each has a losing record -- before their annual rivalry game with Georgia.

But Gailey is urging his team to take the Wolfpack seriously.

"It's a conference game, and you go and win conference games," Gailey said. "Division games are more important, but conference games are still important because they count in the end and you want to be able to finish strong as a football team. Let's go win the game and prove what kind of a football team we are."

It has been an inconsistent season for the Wolfpack (3-5, 2-3).

They have juxtaposed surprising losses (Akron, Southern Mississippi) with surprising nighttime home victories against ranked teams (Boston College, Florida State) in wins engineered by Evans. But they followed their upset of the Seminoles by losing three straight.

"We have a hard time explaining it to ourselves," Amato said. "We were very charitable three weeks ago and two weeks ago (in losses to Wake Forest and Maryland). We told our youngsters that we have to stop being so charitable. At the end of every game we have lost these last three weeks, we are fighting for the opportunity to possibly pull it out."

Maybe they need a faster start. N.C. State hasn't scored in the first quarter of its past four games, has 12 total in that quarter this season and hasn't scored a first-quarter touchdown against a Division I-A team.

"We have tried everything in the world," Amato said. "It comes down to not making mistakes early in the first quarter that becomes hidden yardage for yourself and for your team."
