Utah did enough to extend the longest winning streak in the nation last week. Now the Utes will be looking to improve as they try to keep their run alive in a matchup with San Jose State, which is coming off a lopsided loss in its season opener.

The No. 17 Utes go for their 16th straight victory when they hit the road to take on the Spartans on Saturday night.

Utah defeated Utah State 35-17 last Friday night, as junior college transfer Terrance Cain passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns in his Utes debut.

"I really didn't feel nervous. I've played this game a long time," said Cain, who played two years of junior college in Texas before transferring to Utah. "I was just trying to stay composed. I never really get too excited."

Matt Asiata ran for a career-best 156 yards and two touchdowns and David Reed had 10 catches for 172 yards and a score for the Utes, who have not lost since Nov. 24, 2007. Reed had 253 all-purpose yards.

Utah finished with 519 yards of offense and held Utah State to 342 -- 96 of which came on Robert Turbin's touchdown run in the first quarter. The Utes, though, committed three turnovers.

"We turned the ball over three times and that can be a recipe for disaster," coach Kyle Whittingham said. "Fortunately, the entire defense was very efficient."

Whittingham's team can tie the second-longest win streak in program history, as the Utes won 16 in a row from Nov. 29, 1928-Nov. 27, 1930. The school record is 18 consecutive victories, set Nov. 1, 2003-Sept. 10, 2005.

Judging by San Jose State's performance last week, Utah may not have to be in top form to continue its run. The Spartans were pounded 56-3 at then-No. 4 Southern California, getting outgained 620-121 and 342-9 on the ground.

"They were too much better for us to hang in there," coach Dick Tomey said. "I've seen them do that to lots of teams. It's a lesson for us to learn. I hate it, but it's necessary for us to get better."

Kyle Reed, Jordan La Secla and Myles Eden combined to go 15 of 30 for 112 yards for San Jose State, though they didn't throw an interception. Patrick Perry ran for a team-high 48 yards, and five Bulldogs finished with negative rushing yardage.

San Jose State went 1 for 16 on third-down conversions.

Utah has won 10 straight non-conference games -- five of which came on the road -- and taken its last eight road games overall, three shy of the school record.

Utah leads the series with San Jose State 4-1. The teams have not played since the Utes were in their final year in the Western Athletic Conference in 1998, winning 49-17 at Spartan Stadium on Oct. 31.
