AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Joshua Cribbs directed two late touchdown drives and Jon Drager's punt return set up Travis Mayle's 40-yard field goal on the final play as Kent State beat Akron 41-38 Thursday night.

The Golden Flashes scored 17 points over the final 3:29 to erase a 38-24 deficit and spoil a record-setting performance by Akron quarterback Charlie Frye, who set school marks for completions, passing yards and total offense.

Cribbs completed 25-of-43 passes for 340 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 57 yards a 1-yard score that pulled the Golden Flashes (1-0, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) to 38-31.

After forcing the Zips (0-1, 0-1) to punt, the Golden Flashes drove 65 yards in eight plays and tied the score 38-38 on Antwan Smith's 5-yard run with 1:16 remaining.

Daniel Muir sacked Frye for a 10-yard loss on third down of the Zips' next series, forcing a punt. Drager returned it 34 yards to the Akron 25, and Mayle made the winning kick three plays later.

Frye completed 36-of-46 for 407 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a score. Matt Cherry had 150 yards receiving and a touchdown on seven catches, and Miquel Irvin had 10 catches for 101 yards and a TD for the Zips.
