STARKVILLE, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Oregon coach Mike Bellotti may stick with his two-quarterback approach for at least another week.

Kellen Clemens and Jason Fife combined to pass for 358 yards and four touchdowns as the Ducks held on for a 42-34 victory over Mississippi State in the season opener for both teams.

Clemens completed 14-of-21 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns and Fife was 8-of-8 for 111 yards and a score.

The Ducks scored on their first four possessions to build a 28-0 lead in the first quarter before Mississippi State closed within 28-21.

Oregon responded as Clemens threw a 12-yard pass to Matt Floberg and Fife scored on a six-yard keeper to make it 42-21 with 24 seconds left in the third quarter.

Kevin Fant completed 23-of-40 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns for Mississippi State, which scored twice in the fourth quarter to make it close.

However, the Bulldogs, coming off two straight three-win seasons, hurt themselves with three turnovers.

Clemens, who completed seven of his first eight passes for 183 yards, threw TD passes of 55 yards to Jamie Parker and 86 yards to Demetrius Williams in the first period.
