LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) -- Scott Pendarvis threw for 186 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead McNeese State to a 42-0 victory over Henderson State in the season opener for both teams Saturday night.

Pendarvis completed 14 of his 17 passes and was rested at times in favor of backup Ryan Corcoran, who was nearly as effective, hitting seven of 10 passes for 73 yards and a score.

McNeese had 483 total yards -- with 259 coming in the air and 224 on the ground -- and never punted. Vick King led the McNeese ground game with 62 yards on 10 carries, including a 1-yard touchdown run that gave the Cowboys a 32-0 lead early in the second half.

Luke Lawton and Britt Brodhead each scored a pair of TDs. Lawton caught a 6-yard pass to give McNeese a 6-0 lead, then ran for a score from 8 yards out to put the Cowboys ahead 12-0.

Brodhead caught scoring passes of 15 and 14 yards in the second quarter.

Henderson State, a Division II team, gained 217 yards on the ground against McNeese, perennial I-AA powerhouse. Arthur Burnett led the effort with 62 yards rushing. But Blake Christenson, who gained 47 yards on the ground, was only 2-for-5 passing for 18 yards. Henderson also lost three fumbles.
