COLONIE, N.Y. (AP) -- Dennis Calacione caught two touchdown
passed from quarter Billy Brieden, and Frank Meade stopped a late
drive with an interception with 20 seconds to play as Iona beat
Siena 19-14 Saturday.
The Saints (0-1) tried to mount a comeback from a 16-7 halftime
deficit. Siena's Dan Smacchia forced a fumble that Brandon Matano
recovered and returned for an 82-yard touchdown to cut Iona's lead
The Gaels (1-0) began the fourth quarter with its final scoring
drive capped by Spencer Callahan's 27-yard field goal that brought
Iona to 19-14. The Saints stopped Iona on its next two possessions
before gaining the ball at its own 12-yard line with 2:41 to play.
Christian Karolus began to lead the Saints down the field,
driving to the Iona 32-yard line with back-to-back passes to Pat
McCormack. The Saints' rally attempt came to an end on the next
play as Meade picked off a pass by Karolus at the Iona 3-yard line
with 20 seconds to play.
Smacchia had 17 tackles to lead all defensive players.
Karolus completed 10 of 17 passes for 134 yards and one
interception. McCormack led all Siena receivers with six catches
for 55 yards.
