LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) -- As much as the winning Cowboys of old seemed to shine through in the second halves of their last two games, it has so far been too little, too late to make a winning difference.

Wyoming outscored Oklahoma State 17-7 in the second half toward a 48-24 loss Sept. 6. On Saturday, the Pokes outscored Kansas 21-7 in the second half but lost 42-35.

Although the late scoring in Stillwater had a lot to do with OSU's second string, the second-half revival against the Jayhawks -- including a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter -- was something else.

"(Wyoming) never gave up and we just hung on," Kansas quarterback Bill Whittemore said. "It did get a little tense there at the end, but we showed a lot of poise."

Whittemore finished 12-of-15 passing for 269 yards. He connected three times to Charles Gordon for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns and two times with Mark Simmons for 83 yards and a TD.

"Whittemore was too much for us," Wyoming coach Joe Glenn said. "He made some big plays on us in addition to another big play when they sacked Casey (Bramlet) and returned it for a touchdown. You end up having nightmares about those kinds of plays."

Bramlet completed his last 18 passes and finished 33-of-46. That was considerably better than his 51.5 percent average going into the game.

With about five minutes left, he connected with Ryan McGuffey on a 4-yard touchdown pass, bringing the Cowboys within 42-28. Kansas failed to convert on its next possession and Wyoming capped a 55-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jovon Bouknight.

Bramlet, who tallied 328 yards, connected twice each to McGuffey and Bouknight for a total of four touchdowns.

Understandably, however, Glenn was disappointed to fall behind 35-14 at halftime. KU scored three unanswered touchdowns in the first half: once late in the first quarter and twice in the second.

"We really couldn't find ourselves in the second quarter," he said. "We did come out and compete well in the second half, but we need to find a way to win."

Yet he remained optimistic: "There is a tremendous amount of desire to win. The seniors on this team are going to find a way to win. They are competing hard and they will get the job done," he said.

Kansas coach Mark Mangino was happy to get a win on the road and his team's first consecutive win since September 2000. The Jayhawks are coming off a 46-24 win over UNLV and host Jacksonville State next weekend.

"Give Wyoming credit," Mangino said. "They played hard 'til the end and they never gave up. I felt we came in as underdogs and they really wanted to win at home."

The Jayhawks went ahead 14-7 after Bramlet got sacked by Brandon Perkins. David McMillan picked up the ball and returned it 53 yards to score at 6:03 left in the first quarter.

Wyoming tied the game at 14 with 1:57 left in the quarter after Bramlet connected with Bouknight for a 47-yard touchdown. But before the clock ran out, Kansas got ahead 21-14 after Austine Nwabuisi ran in from 8 yards.

The Jayhawks widened their lead to 28-14 in the beginning of the second quarter when Whittemore connected with Gordon 32 yards. Then on Kansas' first play of its next possession, Whittemore hit Simmons for a 70-yard touchdown.

The Cowboys begin Mountain West Conference play next weekend at Air Force, which is 3-0 after beating North Texas 34-21. At the very least Wyoming's defense faces a tough challenge: Air Force is averaging 35 points and 435 yards a game.
