EL PASO, Texas (Ticker) -- Howard Jackson rushed for 160 yards
and a touchdown as Texas-El Paso routed Division I-AA Sam
Houston State, 59-14, for its first win of the season.

Redshirt freshman Jordan Palmer passed for two touchdowns and
ran for another score for the Miners (1-4), who opened a
28-point halftime lead and cruised thereafter.

UTEP got on the board on a two-yard run by Jimmy Smith 1:39 into
the contest and Jackson made it 14-0 on a seven-yard run with
10:18 left in the first half.

Palmer scored on a one-yard run with 3:29 remaining before
linebacker Thomas Howard intercepted a pass from Travis Tobanen
and ran 56 yards for a touchdown with 54 seconds to play.

Miners defensive back Tim Woodard made it 59-7 with a 30-yard
fumble recovery for a touchdown with 11:05 to play in the

Palmer was 13-of-23 for 170 yards and two interceptions for
UTEP, which recovered four Bearkat fumbles in addition to
Howard's interception.

Tobanen went 9-of-19 for 93 yards and backup Wade Pate completed
2-of-9 passes for 41 yards and one interception for Sam Houston
State (1-3), which lost its third straight game and second in a
row against a Division I-A foe. The Bearkats lost at Baylor
last week, 27-6.
