BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Roddy White caught touchdown passes of
95 and 56 yards as UAB used a big-play offense to defeat Cincinnati
31-14 on Saturday.
Darrell Hackney completed 12 of 21 passes for 277 yards and two
TDs as UAB (3-3, 2-1 Conference USA) won its second game in a row.
Freshman tailback Trey Chaney ran for 112 yards on 29 carries and
fullback Corey White scored twice on 1-yard runs for the Blazers.
Quarterback Gino Guidugli, playing with a sore knee, completed
21 of 43 passes for 219 yards to lead Cincinnati (3-3, 1-2). Bill
Poland caught five passes for 72 yards for the Bearcats, who lost
their third game in a row.
Most of the offense came early as UAB jumped to a 28-14 halftime
lead. A 28-yard field goal by the Blazers' Nick Hayes provided the
only points of the second half.
In getting off to a 1-3 start this season, UAB lost nine
fumbles. But the Blazers played their second game in a row without
losing a fumble.
A 42-yard field goal by Chet Ervin gave Cincinnati an early 3-0
UAB responded with a 15-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a
1-yard TD run on fourth down by Corey White. A 46-yard pass from
Hackney to Bradley Chavez was the key play in the drive.
A 36-yard field goal by Ervin pulled Cincinnati to within 7-6.
Then a Bearcat punt went out of bounds on the 5-yard line, pinning
UAB deep in its own territory. But on the first play, Hackney hit
Roddy White behind the Cincinnati secondary for a 95-yard scoring
play, giving UAB a 14-6 lead.
UAB had the momentum, but not for long. Guidugli threw a 50-yard
pass to Poland, carrying to the UAB 11. Backup quarterback George
Murray scored on a 3-yard run and added a 2-point conversion run to
make it 14-14.
With 3:13 left in the second quarter, UAB's Jhun Cook blocked a
Cincinnati punt and Julius Wainwright recovered at the Cincinnati
1. Corey White powered into the end zone for a touchdown to give
UAB a 21-14 lead.
UAB started its final possession of the half at its own 38 with
44 seconds left. On the third play, Hackney hit Roddy White for a
56-yard TD that made it 28-14 at the half.
