UAB 31, Cincinnati 14

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Roddy White caught touchdown passes of 95 and 56 yards as UAB used a big-play offense to defeat Cincinnati 31-14 on Saturday.

Darrell Hackney completed 12 of 21 passes for 277 yards and two TDs as UAB (3-3, 2-1 Conference USA) won its second game in a row. Freshman tailback Trey Chaney ran for 112 yards on 29 carries and fullback Corey White scored twice on 1-yard runs for the Blazers.

Quarterback Gino Guidugli, playing with a sore knee, completed 21 of 43 passes for 219 yards to lead Cincinnati (3-3, 1-2). Bill Poland caught five passes for 72 yards for the Bearcats, who lost their third game in a row.

Most of the offense came early as UAB jumped to a 28-14 halftime lead. A 28-yard field goal by the Blazers' Nick Hayes provided the only points of the second half.

In getting off to a 1-3 start this season, UAB lost nine fumbles. But the Blazers played their second game in a row without losing a fumble.

A 42-yard field goal by Chet Ervin gave Cincinnati an early 3-0 lead.

UAB responded with a 15-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard TD run on fourth down by Corey White. A 46-yard pass from Hackney to Bradley Chavez was the key play in the drive.

A 36-yard field goal by Ervin pulled Cincinnati to within 7-6. Then a Bearcat punt went out of bounds on the 5-yard line, pinning UAB deep in its own territory. But on the first play, Hackney hit Roddy White behind the Cincinnati secondary for a 95-yard scoring play, giving UAB a 14-6 lead.

UAB had the momentum, but not for long. Guidugli threw a 50-yard pass to Poland, carrying to the UAB 11. Backup quarterback George Murray scored on a 3-yard run and added a 2-point conversion run to make it 14-14.

With 3:13 left in the second quarter, UAB's Jhun Cook blocked a Cincinnati punt and Julius Wainwright recovered at the Cincinnati 1. Corey White powered into the end zone for a touchdown to give UAB a 21-14 lead.

UAB started its final possession of the half at its own 38 with 44 seconds left. On the third play, Hackney hit Roddy White for a 56-yard TD that made it 28-14 at the half.
