JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- John Leverett rushed for 259 yards and
scored two touchdowns to lead Davidson to a 37-29 win Saturday over
Leverett, a 200-pound junior running back, scored on runs of 8
and 71 yards in going over the 100-yard mark for the fourth
consecutive game. Leverett's first 200-yard game of his career fell
one yard short of the school record set in 1981.
Davidson (3-4, 1-0 Pioneer Football League) got 17 points in the
third quarter to add to its 13-6 halftime lead.
Quarterback Damion White connected with Barrett Johnson from 34
yards early in the third quarter, and added a second TD pass midway
in the fourth quarter when he combined with Brett Dioguardi on an
83-yard scoring play.
Johnson's TD reception marked the fourth game in a row that the
senior receiver had scored on a pass reception.
Jacksonville battled back in the fourth quarter to score the
game's last two touchdowns on plays from quarterback Mike Sturgill
to Julio Santiago. The Dolphins recovered the onside kick following
the second score with 10 seconds remaining, but couldn't get a pass
off on the game's last play.
Sturgill finished with a season-best of 292 passing yards for
the Dolphins (3-3, 0-1).
