DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- David Macchi passed for 404 yards and four
touchdowns Saturday as Valparaiso beat Dayton 33-28, snapping the
longest Division I-AA winning streak at 14 games.
Macchi completed 22 of 33 passes with TD throws of 36 and 78
yards to Rob Giancola, 18 yards to Matt Van Daele and 16 yards to
Kevin Knutson. Giancola had 275 yards receiving on seven receptions

and three interceptions for the Flyers (6-1, 0-1). He also rushed
for a team-best 86 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Ryan
Wrobleski had six catches for 106 yards and a touchdown.
After the Flyers closed to 27-21 on Staley's 19-yard TD pass to
Matt Ryan with 5:47 to play, Macchi found Giancola for a 78-yard
touchdown 67 seconds on a third-and-8 play to put the Crusaders
ahead by 12.
Geno Mattioda scored on a 3-yard run with 2:24 remaining to pull
the Flyers within five, and Dayton forced the Crusaders to punt.
Dayton got the ball at its own 10 with 1:48 remaining and drove
to the Valparaiso 16, where the drive stalled with four
incompletions. Valparaiso took possession with 41 seconds left and
ran out the clock.
The loss snapped Dayton's 10-game conference winning streak. It
was only the Flyers' second home loss in the Pioneer League since
the conference started in 1993.
