Samford 35, Murray State 6

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Cortland Finnegan had two interceptions, returning one 56 yards for a touchdown, as Samford pulled away late in a 35-6 win over Murray State on Saturday.

Fred Gilliam added 73 yards rushing and Efrem Hill had a 26-yard TD among his 89 yards receiving for the Bulldogs (4-2, 2-1 Ohio Valley Conference).

Murray State (2-5, 1-2) got off to a 3-0 lead on a 43-yard field goal by Jesse Ohliger, but two minutes later the Racers found themselves backed up inside their own 5-yard line. Ulysses Odoms bobbled a pitch, and Darold Williams led a host of Bulldogs in swarming Odoms in the end zone for a safety.

D.J. Stancil added a 3-yard TD run, though a 2-point conversion failed. Then midway through the second quarter, Ray Nelson threw a 26-yard TD to Hill and Samford led 15-3 at the half.

The teams traded field goals in the third quarter before Finnegan picked off a Stephen Hatchell pass and returned it 56 yards for a score.

Backup quarterback Kevin Tooker sneaked in from 1 yard out to make it 32-6, and Ty Neil added his second field goal for the final margin.

Nelson was 15-of-31 for 150 yards and no interceptions for Samford.

Hatchell led the Racers with 189 yards on 20-of-36 passing.
