TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Tulsa quarterback James Kilian had plenty of time to throw for five touchdowns Saturday, thanks to a stiff northern wind and the offensive line.

Kilian credited both, along with two fleet-footed receivers, after throwing for 177 yards in the Golden Hurricane's 35-16 win over Southern Methodist.

"They were giving me plenty of time to look downfield," he said.

Kilian's five touchdown passes were the most in a game since Gus Frerotte threw for six touchdowns against East Carolina in 1993. Coach Steve Kragthorpe also pointed to the offensive line.

"On numerous occasions, James was eating a hotdog and drinking Coke and chucking it down the field," he said.

The victory for Tulsa (4-4, 2-2 Western Athletic Conference) extended the WAC's longest losing streak to 0-8. Southern Methodist is 0-5 in the league.

The Mustangs narrowed a 14-point Tulsa lead to 5 points at 21-16 when Jonas Rutledge returned an interception 14 yards for a touchdown with 11:47 remaining in the game.

But then Kilian met Garrett Mills on a 4-yard pass for a touchdown with 10:02 left and found Romby Bryant for a 43-yard touchdown pass less than two minutes later to ensure the homecoming victory.

Mills finished with three touchdown receptions and Bryant had two.

Kragthorpe said the touchdown drive after SMU's interception was key to the victory.

"I looked at our guys' eyes," he said. `It wasn't like, `Oh no, here we go again.' It was more like, `Okay, we've got to do something to get this back in our favor,' and we did it on that drive."

The Mustangs had hoped to ignite a lagging offense this week by giving freshman quarterback Chris Phillips his first collegiate start.

But Phillips completed only 2 of 4 passing attempts for 18 yards and gained only 44 yards rushing. He ended up alternating with Tate Wallis, who finished with 33 yards passing and 16 yards rushing.

Penalties may have hurt the Mustangs most, though. Southern Methodist lost 119 yards on 17 penalties.

"Penalties on offense and false starts put us in a hole," coach Phil Bennett said. "The wounds were self-inflicted."

Keylon Kincade, who has rushed for more than 100 yards in five of the last seven games, kept Southern Methodist's hopes alive.

He carried 11 times for 61 yards on the Mustang's first drive, scoring on an 11-yard run that gave Southern Methodist its only lead of the game at 7-0.

Kincade led the Mustangs with 185 yards rushing.
