Tulane 38, UAB 24

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- About a month ago, Tulane coach Chris Scelfo told backup tailback Jovon Jackson to work harder in practice in case star Mewelde Moore ever got hurt.

With Moore out for Saturday's game against UAB with a broken hand, Jackson got his first career start and proved he'd listened to his coach -- rushing for 183 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-24 win.

"At one point, Jovon wasn't working hard enough in practice," Scelfo said. "I think he thought Mewelde was just going to play out the season. But I told him that he was just one play away from being in there.

"But he's been preparing hard since then and responded well today."

J.P. Losman threw three touchdown passes, including a 78-yarder to Roydell Williams in the third quarter, as Tulane (4-6, 2-4 Conference USA) snapped a five-game losing streak. Chris Bush caught touchdowns of 25 and 35 yards from the senior signal-caller, who was 16-of-33 for 255 yards and hit several big passes while scrambling.

"Losman did a great job of sliding around in the pocket until he found someone open," UAB coach WatsonBrown said. "He kept his cool under pressure, and that was the difference in the game."

UAB (4-6, 3-3) went with freshman quarterback Chris Williams, who completed only 11 of 30 passes with two interceptions in his third start.

Backup Curtis Falany came on and nearly brought the Blazers back. His 61-yard touchdown pass to Roddy White cut the Green Wave's lead to 31-24 with 5:55 left in the game.

Tulane drove near midfield, but Jackson fumbled and UAB's Kyle Bissinger recovered at the Tulane 49. The Blazers drove to the 2, but Trey Chaney fumbled and Tulane's Sean Lucas recovered.

A few plays later, Jackson broke an 85-yard touchdown run to clinch the victory.

Corey White led UAB with 138 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Roddy White had six catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
