SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The conditions were sloppy, and both teams were, too, at times, but Montana left a rainy field here Saturday night atop the Big Sky Conference with a 26-0 shutout of Sacramento State.
"It was a downpour," said UM coach Bobby Hauck, a former University of Washington assistant. "I worked four years in Seattle and I never coached in a game that was this rainy."
Justin Green conquered the elements, rushing for 108 yards and two touchdowns in a driving rain to lead the Grizzlies (8-2, 4-1 Big Sky), ranked eighth in NCAA Division I-AA.
Green scored on runs of 2 and 11 yards in the first quarter, and had 97 yards rushing by halftime.
"He had a nice game," Hauck said. "He ran the ball hard. The conditions made it hard to do much. For him to rush over 100 yards in that was a good night for him."
Craig Ochs completed 12 of 26 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown for the Grizzlies.
The weather seemed to take a toll on both teams, as they combined for 12 fumbles. But while Montana retained all but one of its seven fumbles, the Hornets (2-8, 1-5) lost three of five, including one that Grizzly safety Dave DeCoite returned 52 yards for a first-quarter touchdown.
"A lot of times when the ball was loose it went to the team that let it go," Hauck said.
Montana scored all of its points in the first 19 minutes.
After Green's two touchdowns and DeCoite's fumble return, Ochs hit Dane Oliver on a 37-yard touchdown pass with 11:36 to play in the half, completing the scoring.
Ochs threw the ball off his back foot.
"The conditions made it hard to look very clean or real precise on offense," Hauck said. "Our guys made enough plays to win it."
Montana kicker Chris Snyder saw his I-AA record for consecutive extra points end at 126. He made the PAT after the first touchdown, but missed the second attempt and the third was blocked. Snyder made the PAT after Oliver's touchdown catch.
It was the sixth straight loss for Sacramento State (2-8, 1-5), which hasn't won since beating Idaho State 47-21 on Sept. 27.
Already without first-string quarterback Ryan Leadingham, who is out for the season with a broken wrist, the Hornets replaced Saturday's ineffective starter Blake Mori in the second half with receiver Kenan Smith. Smith completed 5 of 11 passes for 46 yards and an interception.
Montana had more fans in the stands than the Hornets, "by quite a lot, I think," Hauck said. "It was a bad night to draw people out. They really didn't have anybody here."
