CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia (Ticker) -- Connor Hughes tied a
school record with five field goals as Virginia became bowl
eligible with a 29-17 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over
Hughes kicked field goals of 31, 25 and 50 yards in the first
half, the added kicks of 30 and 20 yards in the fourth quarter
for the Cavaliers (6-5, 4-4), who assured themselves a .500
finish in the ACC.
Virginia, which closes its season next week against Virginia
Tech, snapped a two-game losing streak.
Matt Schaub completed 26-of-35 passes for 239 yards and a
touchdown while Wali Lundy rushed for 96 yards on 27 carries for
Virginia never trailed after Schaub threw a 10-yard TD strike to
to Heath Miller to open the scoring six minutes into the game.
Marques Hagans' two-yard TD run with 35 seconds left in the
second quarter gave the Cavaliers a 23-7 cushion at the
Georgia Tech (6-5, 4-4) closed to 23-17 in the third quarter on
Jonathan Smith's 80-yard punt return and Dan Burnett's 37-yard
Reggie Ball completed 16-of-30 passes for 157 yards with an
interception for the Yellow Jackets, who host Georgia next week.
P.J. Daniels rushed for 76 yards on 18 carries for Georgia Tech,
including a 15-yard TD run midway through the second period.
