Samford 34, West Alabama 20

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Ray Nelson threw for 321 yards and five touchdowns and Samford defeated West Alabama 34-20 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Efrem Hill had three touchdowns and 209 yards on nine catches for the Bulldogs, who rolled up 438 yards total offense against the Division II Tigers.

West Alabama actually took a 7-6 lead on Marcus Ross' 19-yard run and Tonya Butler's successful extra point, and Butler's 24-yard field goal sent the Tigers into the half trailing only 12-10.

But leading 19-13 in the fourth quarter, Samford scored 15 points in a six-second span to put the game away. Nelson hit Freddy Young for a 15-yard TD, then found him again for a two-point conversion.

West Alabama's Kellen DaCosta fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Samford recovered at the 21 yard line. On the next play, Hill caught his third TD pass from Nelson and the Bulldogs led 34-13.

Kelvin Vann returned a fumble 74 yards for a West Alabama touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
