ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (AP) -- Damian Melancon passed for one
touchdown and ran for another Saturday as Southern Arkansas topped
Henderson State 31-27.
SAU (5-6, 3-6 Gulf South Conference) and HSU (2-8, 2-7) were
tied at 19 points each at the half, but the Muleriders took a 28-14
lead with two touchdowns in the third period.
The Reddies scored first, on a 1-yard run by Arthur Burnett, and
SAU responded with a pass from Melancon to Johnny Fields on a
24-yard TD, in the first quarter.
In the second period, the two teams traded TDs again, with HSU
regaining the lead when Blake Christenson connected with Jace
Garrison for a 45-yard scoring play. SAU answered with a 19-yard TD
run by LaRon Sylvester.
After intermission, Melancon put SAU in front 21-14 with a
9-yard run for a touchdown, and Torrence Jones added another score
for the Muleriders with a 1-yard run.
The final period saw the Reddies score two touchdowns themselves
-- on a 5-yard run by Larry Owens and a 10-yard dash by Rodney
Stewart. But a point-after kick was blocked, and SAU's David Korff
kicked a 21-yard field goal for the final margin.
