Furman 31, Western Carolina 10

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Ingle Martin threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns as Furman beat Western Carolina 31-10 on Saturday in the Southern Conference opener for both teams.

The Catamounts (2-3) gained 351 yards to the Paladins' 285, but Western Carolina threw three interceptions.

One pick by Jeremy Blocker was returned 58 yards for a touchdown to give Furman (4-1) a 24-3 lead early in the third quarter. The other two interceptions came in the end zone in the fourth quarter as Western Carolina tried to come back.

Martin was 17-of-25, throwing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Daric Carter in the first quarter and a 25-yard strike to Brian Bratton that the senior fumbled into the end zone but the Paladins recovered for their final touchdown and a 31-3 lead.

Starter Bennett Swygert was 14-for-20 for 87 yards for the Catamounts, who used three quarterbacks. Ten different receivers caught passes for Western Carolina, led by Andre Hemphill's four receptions for 34 yards.

The Catamounts gained 158 yards in the fourth quarter, but managed just one touchdown on a 2-yard run by Nicholas Wishart.
