North Texas 30, Middle Tenn. St. 21

DENTON, Texas (AP) -- Jamario Thomas ran for 179 yards and two
touchdowns as North Texas extended its Sun Belt winning streak to
19 games with a 30-21 victory over Middle Tennessee State on
Saturday night.

Thomas was starting in place of Patrick Cobbs, the leading
rusher in NCAA Division I-A last year who is out for the season
with a knee injury. Thomas, a freshman, had scoring runs of 25 and
six yards for UNT (1-4, 1-0).

Middle Tennessee (1-3, 0-2) rallied late, but North Texas
cornerback TJ Covington intercepted Clint Marks in the end zone
with 49 seconds left.

Middle Tennessee pulled within 24-21 late in the third quarter
on a 7-yard scoring toss from Marks to Kerry Wright.

But UNT's Nick Bazaldua kicked two fourth quarter field goals
including an 18-yarder with 4:12 left to help the Mean Green secure
the win.

The Blue Raiders jumped to a 14-0 lead after scoring on their
first two possessions.

But then Thomas scored twice as the Mean Green scored 24
consecutive second-quarter points to take a 24-14 halftime lead.

The Mean Green took the a 17-14 lead on a two-play drive -- a
49-yard pass from Scott Hall to Johnny Quinn and a 31-yard score
from Hall to Quinn.

Hall was 17-of-23 for 285 yards and Quinn caught six passes for
153 yards.

Middle Tennessee running back Eugene Gross led Middle Tennessee
with 115 yards on 20 carries. He scored on a 15-yard touchdown run
to put Middle Tennessee up 14-0.
