Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, AUSTIN, TX
No. 2 Oklahoma, the border rival that has thrashed the fifth-ranked Longhorns four straight years, heads south next weekend for the Red River Shootout in Dallas.
The chants poured down Saturday as the Longhorns left the field. But by the time they reached the locker room, the players and coach Mack Brown didn't want to hear them.
Brown wanted the Longhorns to enjoy their first Big 12 conference win of the year, as well as a milestone for tailback Cedric Benson.
Benson ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns against Baylor, moving past Earl Campbell into second place on the Texas career rushing chart -- trailing only Ricky Williams.
"They really owe it to themselves to enjoy it for a day after they win," Brown said. "I told them I'm not talking about the next opponent until Monday."
Vince Young threw his first two touchdown passes of the season to a wide receiver, both going to Tony Jeffery.
"No comment about OU," Young said. "We're not even thinking about it. We had a great win and we're having fun."
The Longhorns (4-0, 1-0) made quick work of the Bears, scoring on their first two drives and rolling up a 37-7 lead by halftime.
"We are a better team than we were out there today," said Baylor coach Guy Morriss. "I am waiting for the players to start believing in themselves a little bit more."
The nation's top rushing attack continued to chew up yards on the ground, piling up 303 against the Bears (2-2, 0-1).
Benson had a season-high 34 carries, staying in the game until the fourth quarter.
He passed Campbell on the first drive of the fourth quarter to reach 4,452 yards, nine more than the former Heisman Trophy winner who played from 1974-1977. Williams holds the school rushing record with 6,207 yards.
"It's a great honor," said Benson, who also tied a school record with a touchdown in 11 straight games. "I started to get a little emotional."
Brown was nervous about leaving his star player in the game and risking injury with the Sooners up next.
"I really do not feel comfortable leaving him in, but he asked," Brown said. "I thought it was a good time to get it out of the way before next week."
Baylor also gave Texas a chance to work on an unproven passing game and an untested pass defense.
Young completed 15 of 20 passes for 189 yards and the defense recorded its first two sacks of the season.
Texas led 14-0 behind Benson's 11-yard TD run and Bo Scaife's fumble recovery in the end zone, when Benson dropped the ball just before reaching the goal line.
Baylor answered with a 24-yard scoring pass from Dane King to Marques Roberts to make it 14-7. King finished with 165 yards and the TD pass was Baylor's first points against Texas since 2001.
But little else went right for the Bears. The Longhorns ripped off 23 points to close the first half as Young and his wide receivers started heating up.
Young connected with Jeffery on scoring passes of 23 and 14 yards. The second came when Jeffery spun out of a tackle at the 5 and strolled over the goal line.
The emergence of a more diverse passing game should help open up the field for Benson. Texas had to replace nearly its entire receiving corps after last season and the new group was slow to catch on during the first three games.
Young, who had made his tight ends his favorite targets, was able to spread the ball around to seven different receivers.
"It was great to see them making plays," Young said. "I told them all game long I'm coming at them."
