NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) -- Mike McClelland scored three
touchdowns to lead Monmouth past winless Iona 40-14 on Saturday.
McClelland scored on 15- and 26-yard catches -- his only
receptions -- and a 4-yard return of a blocked punt.
Brendan Kennedy was 10-for-15 for 128 yards and two TDs for the
Hawks (4-1), who opened up a 30-0 lead. Starter Brian Boland was
6-for-20 for 169 yards and one TD.
Mike Diehl finished 15-for-26 for 193 yards, with two TDs and
four interceptions for the Gaels (0-4). Diehl's 18-yard pass to
Dennis Calacione at 6:46 of the second quarter avoided a shutout,
Calacione finished with seven catches for 117 yards. Monmouth's
Mike Austin had five catches for 146 yards and a touchdown.
With only currently 75 bowl-eligible teams to fill 80 bowl berths, at least two bowls -- and maybe more -- will need teams with 5-7 records.
