Iowa 38, Michigan State 16

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Drew Tate passed for 340 yards and a touchdown and set up two other scores with long completions, leading Iowa to a 38-16 victory over Michigan State on Saturday.

Iowa (3-2, 1-1) has struggled on offense most of the year, but Tate's passing helped the Hawkeyes amass a season-high 464 yards and break a two-game losing streak.

Jermelle Lewis ran 47 yards for an Iowa touchdown before leaving the game with what appeared to be a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. His replacement, Marques Simmons, scored on two short runs.

The Hawkeyes jumped to a 14-0 lead with two 80-yard drives in the first quarter and kept Michigan State (2-3, 1-1) out of the end zone until Drew Stanton scored on a 1-yard run with 4:24 left.

Tate completed 25 of 36 passes, including a 15-yarder to Ed Hinkel for a touchdown, and became the first Iowa quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards since Jon Beutjer had 380 against Indiana on Sept. 30, 2000. Beutjer transferred to Illinois the following year and is now the Illini's starter.

Michigan State had 449 yards but was hurt by sloppy play throughout.

Jason Randall and Eric Knott dropped passes from Stanton that might have gone for touchdowns, the Spartans missed tackles and gave Iowa a first down on each of its first two scoring drives with penalties.

In the fourth quarter, an Iowa punt hit Michigan State's David Herron in the back and the Hawkeyes recovered at the MSU 2. Simmons scored two plays later to stretch Iowa's lead to 38-9.

Lewis, who missed half of last season with a torn ACL, was hurt when he was tackled after gaining 28 yards on a pass reception in the second quarter. He was the third Iowa running back to go out with a knee injury this season. Marcus Schnoor and Albert Young were lost earlier with torn ACLs.

Lewis scored on the game's seventh play. He took a handoff on third-and-1 at the Michigan State 47, slipped two attempted tackles at the line of scrimmage, cut to his left and outran the pursuit down the sideline.

It was Iowa's first rushing touchdown since Young scored on a 1-yard run on the Hawkeyes' first possession in a 17-10 victory over Iowa State on Sept. 11.

Later in the quarter, Tate completed four straight passes before rolling to his right and hitting Hinkel in the back of the end zone to make it 14-0.

Tate's 36-yard completion to Clinton Solomon on a hurry-up drive in the final minute of the first half set up Kyle Schlicher's 23-yard field goal with 2 seconds left, making it 17-6.

Helped by Roderick Maples' missed tackle, Tate and Hinkel hooked up on a 43-yard play that put the ball on the Michigan State 3 early in the third quarter. On the next play, the Spartans appeared to have fullback Tom Busch stopped at the line of scrimmage, but he squirted free and bulled into the end zone for a 24-6 lead.

Michigan State stalled on its two best drives of the first half and settled for field goals of 25 and 23 yards by Dave Rayner, who added a 42-yarder in the second half.

The Spartans thought they had a first-half touchdown when Kyle Brown came down with the ball after a juggling catch at the back of the end zone. But he was ruled out of bounds and the call stood after the replay official reviewed it.
