MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) -- Jabari McGee rushed for 124 yards and two
touchdowns to lead Morehead State to a 29-23 victory over
Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon.
Morehead State (2-3) intercepted four passes, including two by
safety Chris Hutchinson that led to scores as the Eagles built a
Valparaiso (3-3) answered with 16 fourth-quarter points. A
13-yard pass from third-string quarterback Ryan Doerffler to Kevin
Knutson with 3:33 left cut the Morehead lead to 29-23. Morehead was
able to run out the clock to secure the win.
Morehead's starting quarterback, redshirt freshman Brian Yost,
suffered a broken collar bone in the second quarter. The Eagles
relied on a strong running attack that compiled 236 yards.
McGee scored on a pair of 4-yard touchdown runs, one in the
second quarter to put Morehead ahead 20-7, and another in the third
quarter that made it 29-7.
Casey McCoy opened the scoring with a 2-yard run that gave
Morehead a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Brian Yost ran 9 yards
for a touchdown that put Morehead ahead for good at 13-7. Adam
Jones kicked a 21-yard field goal with 12 seconds left in the first
half to put Morehead ahead 23-7.
Jeff Horton began Valparaiso's comeback with a 2-yard touchdown
reception from Doerffler with 7:10 left in the game. The Crusaders
got a safety to make it 29-16, then added Doerffler's scoring pass
