TOWSON, Md. (AP) -- D.J. Porter didn't pass for a single yard, but he ran for three touchdowns to lead Rhode Island to a 28-16 win against Towson on Saturday.

Porter got Rhode Island (3-2, 1-1 Atlantic 10) on the board in the first quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run. Towson answered with a 7-yard touchdown run from Kerry Miles, tying the game at 7.

Stephen Toth kicked a 37-yard field goal to get a 10-7 lead for the Tigers (2-3, 0-3.)

But in his first career start, Porter had a big third quarter, scoring a touchdown on a 37-yard run. The quarterback scored again on a 27-yard run, giving the Rams a 21-10 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Teddy Gibbons padded the lead on a fumble recovery in the endzone for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Andrew Goldbeck passed for 197 yards for the Tigers.

"Field position -- that was the whole key to the game," said Towson head coach Gordy Combs. "We lost field position several times and that cut down the field size. We were never able to regain the field position."

The Rams finished with 331 total yards, all on ground.
