TOWSON, Md. (AP) -- D.J. Porter didn't pass for a single yard,
but he ran for three touchdowns to lead Rhode Island to a 28-16 win
against Towson on Saturday.
Porter got Rhode Island (3-2, 1-1 Atlantic 10) on the board in
the first quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run. Towson answered with
a 7-yard touchdown run from Kerry Miles, tying the game at 7.
Stephen Toth kicked a 37-yard field goal to get a 10-7 lead for
the Tigers (2-3, 0-3.)
But in his first career start, Porter had a big third quarter,
scoring a touchdown on a 37-yard run. The quarterback scored again
on a 27-yard run, giving the Rams a 21-10 lead going into the
Teddy Gibbons padded the lead on a fumble recovery in the
endzone for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Andrew Goldbeck passed for 197 yards for the Tigers.
"Field position -- that was the whole key to the game," said
Towson head coach Gordy Combs. "We lost field position several
times and that cut down the field size. We were never able to
regain the field position."
The Rams finished with 331 total yards, all on ground.
