HANOVER, N.H. (AP) -- Alvin Cowan threw two scoring passes and
Robert Carr scored one touchdown and gained 164 yards rushing to
lead Yale to a 24-14 victory Saturday over winless Dartmouth.
Dartmouth (0-4 overall, 0-2 Ivy League) rolled up more total
yardage, 364 yards to 339, but the visiting Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1)
also got three interceptions and two fumble recoveries from its
defense to stymie five Big Green drives.
Dartmouth scored the first touchdown on a 26-yard pass from
Charlie Rittgers to Bob Murphy midway through the first period but
Yale bounced back four minutes later to even the score. Alvin
Cowan, who hit on 18 of 28 passes for 206 yards, connected with
Chandler Henley on a 37-yard scoring play with 4:22 left in the
Early in the third period, Yale drove 45 yards in six plays with
Carr scoring on a 1-yard carry. In the final quarter, Cowan flipped
2 yards to Ralph Plumb on a fourth down play with 8:03 remaining,
completing a 14-play, 87-yard scoring march.
Barefooted kicker Andrew Sullivan added a 26-yard field goal for
Yale in addition to three extra points.
Chris Little had the second Dartmouth TD on a 1-yard run and
Erik Hinterbichler converted after both Big Green touchdowns.
