DAVIDSON, N.C. (AP) -- Jacksonville's Mike Sturgill engineered a
12-play, 71-yard drive in the last 3 minutes and hit Eldin Ferguson
with 31 seconds left to top Davidson 29-26 on Saturday.
The late drive overshadowed John Leverett's third rushing
touchdown of the day, which put Davidson ahead 26-21 with 2:56
left. Leverett matched his career high with 259 yards rushing -- one
yard short of the school record.
Davidson (1-4, 0-1 Pioneer Football League) fell short in part
because of failed extra-point attempts after Leverett's last two
scores. After Leverett punched into the end zone from 3 yards out
at 10:39 of the fourth quarter, quarterback Damion White's
White again failed to convert on a pass for a 2-point conversion
after Leverett put Davidson ahead 26-21.
White finished 10 for 26 with one touchdown, a 6-yarder to
Jordan Sundheim, and two interceptions.
Davidson took a 7-0 lead on Leverett's 26-yard run in the first
Jacksonville (1-4, 1-0) pulled even 3:23 later when Omar Platt
returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown.
Sturgill completed 13 passes in 30 attempts for two touchdowns
and one interception. He hit Julio Santiago with a 22-yard score in
the third quarter. Sturgill also hit Santiago with a pass on the
conversion after Ferguson's winning touchdown for the final margin.
