NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Coty Martin ran for 213 of South Carolina
State's 488 rushing yards and was one of three Bulldogs to score
two touchdowns on the ground Saturday night in a 39-14 victory
against Norfolk State.
South Carolina State (4-1, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference)
passed for just 32 yards, but dominated behind a running game that
averaged better than 6.5 yards for 74 carries, held the ball for 38
minutes, 34 seconds and amassed 30 first downs.
The Spartans (1-4, 1-2), who ended a school-record 13-game
losing streak last week, turned the ball over five times in losing
to the Bulldogs for the ninth time in 10 tries.
Martin scored on runs of 2 and 20 yards, Cleveland McCoy on runs
of 18 and 1 yards and DeShawn Baker on runs of 14 and 3 yards for
South Carolina State. McCoy also threw nine passes, completing
four, and had two others intercepted to keep it closer.
Baker finished with 131 yards on 18 carries, and McCoy gained 96
on 17 carries.
The Bulldogs led 26-0 until Howard Gilmore caught a 13-yard TD
pass from Brandon Brooks to get the Spartans on the board with 2:10
left in the third quarter.
