Bobcat Stadium, BOZEMAN, MT
BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) -- For the third weekend in a row, the Montana State football team rallied for a Big Sky Conference victory.
This weekend, Justin Domineck was the hero. He rushed for 75 yards and three touchdowns, including a 17-yard scoring run in overtime, to lift the Bobcats to a 31-24 victory over Portland State Saturday afternoon.
"I've got to give credit to my receivers and fortunately I was able to fight off the inside linebacker," Domineck said.
Portland State (3-3, 1-2 Big Sky) didn't move the football in its overtime possession.
Domineck sent the game into overtime on a 1-yard dive with no time left in regulation, as the Bobcats (4-2, 3-0) rallied from a 14-3 halftime deficit.
"I have never jumped like that over the pile in my whole career," Domineck said.
Domineck's dive capped an 82-yard drive that started with 1:55 remaining and MSU trailing 24-17. The Bobcats converted three fourth down plays.
"I think this was the pageantry, the inspiration, the absolute fury of college football, and then it had to end in overtime," said MSU coach Mike Kramer.
EJ Cochrane, who kicked a 44-yard field goal to cap MSU's 20-17 rally over Weber State a week ago, missed two field goals Saturday, but kicked the extra point that tied the score at the end of regulation and the PAT in overtime.
The rally seemed in doubt just before the half, when quarterback Travis Lulay took a tough hit and was slow getting up.
The medical staff spent most of halftime determining that Lulay didn't have a concussion and was, in fact, able to continue.
"I think he was a little shaky," Kramer said. "After the first series, he was like 'Alright, let's go.' Of course, we went three-and-out, which added to the drama."
The next possession, Lulay marched his team 70 yards for its first touchdown of the game -- a 3-yard run by Domineck -- to cut Portland State's lead to 14-10.
"I was a little more hesitant to run," Lulay said with a laugh.
Instead, he finished with a career-high 375 yards passing.
Eddie Sullivan caught seven passes for 140 yards to lead MSU. Four of those passes were in the Bobcats' final drive of regulation.
"Fortunately it was open and we just kept running it and me and Travis were able to hook up," Sullivan said.
Portland State quarterback Joe Wiser passed for 262 yards and three touchdowns. He hit Adam Whitehead on a 7-yard pass and Shaun Bodiford on a 42-yard pass as PSU took a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
The Bobcats answered with a 22-yard field goal by EJ Cochrane with 3:38 left in the quarter.
"We have a never-say-die attitude," Domineck said. "We never believe we're out of any game. We were down 14-0 last week at halftime and down 14-3 this week."
PSU took a 21-10 lead on a 27-yard TD pass from Wiser to Ryan Brown with 2:15 left in the third.
Lulay got the Bobcats to 21-17 on a 42-yard pass play to Rick Gatewood, who finished with 104 yards receiving.
PSU went up 24-17 on a 43-yard field goal by Eric Azorr, which was kicked after the play clock expired.
The two teams exchanged fumbles at Montana State's 45-yard line, and each team had a possession before the Bobcats' final drive.
"It's why sports is so much better than Hollywood," Kramer said. "'Cause in Hollywood, they write the script to be good in the end. Here, one team had to lose."
Viking defensive lineman Kevin Keanaaina didn't have many words to describe his feelings about the loss.
"(It feels) like we're supposed to when we lose," he said, adding that the Vikings didn't execute well.
PSU running back Ryan Fuqua rushed 34 times for 108 yards, but was held out of the end zone.
