CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (AP) -- Doug Jones returned one of three Dayton
interceptions 30 yards for a touchdown and blocked a punt for a
safety as the Flyers beat Robert Morris 29-12 on Saturday.
Dayton (6-1) entered the game ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division
I-AA Mid-Major poll and handed Robert Morris (4-3) its first-even
three-game home losing streak. Fifth-ranked Robert Morris lost to
No. 2 Central Connecticut State last week.
Dayton sprinted to a 17-0 lead on scoring runs of 8 and 17 yards
by Steve Verhoff and Matt Marshall in the first quarter, and a
19-yard field goal by Jason Resch early in the second.
Robert Morris narrowed the lead when Nate DiLorenzo kicked a
30-yard field goal and Kevin Drakeford scored on a 1-yard run
before the half to make is 17-10.
Jones' blocked punt led to the only third quarter score. After
the block, Robert Morris players prevented a touchdown by kicking
the ball out of their own end zone as Dayton led 19-10.
Jason Resch's 27-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth
quarter extended the lead to 22-10.
Robert Morris scored its final points on a safety caused when
backup quarterback Kevin Hoyng's pitchout landed in the end zone
and Hoyng fell on it. Jones scored the game's final points when he
returned Drew Geyer's third interception for a touchdown after the
ensuing free kick.
Geyer was the closest thing to an offensive star in a sluggish
game. Geyer threw for 243 yards and completed 16 of 34 passes, but
three others were intercepted by Dayton. Robert Morris managed just
65 yards rushing on 32 carries and were led by Kevin Drakeford's 43
Dayton's quarterback tandem of Brandon Staley and Kevin Hoyng
combined for just 78 yards, completing 6 of 12 passes. The Flyers
ground out 203 yards rushing, and were led by Verhoff's 79 yards on
