NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Yale safety Matt Handlon deflected a
pass intended for Columbia tight end Wade Fletcher in the left
corner of the end zone with 37 seconds left to preserve a 21-14 win
for Yale on Saturday.
Robert Carr rushed for 97 yards on 21 carries, including a
1-yard touchdown run that put Yale (4-3, 2-2 Ivy League) ahead 14-7
with 8:40 left in the first half.
Yale quarterback Alvin Cowan completed 15 of 29 pass attempts
for 172 yards and two touchdowns. He was also intercepted twice.
His 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Alex Faherty with 10:09
left in the first quarter gave Yale a 7-0 lead. A 9-yard pass to
Chandler Henley with 1:26 left in the first half made it 21-14.
Fletcher, a 6-foot-7 senior, caught seven passes for 52 yards
and both touchdowns for Columbia (1-6, 1-3).
Rashad Biggers rushed for 129 yards on 30 carries for Columbia.
The Lions had 364 yards of total offense to Yale's 307.
Yale had just 48 yards of offense in the second half. Handlon
also intercepted a pass with 5:48 left in the game.
