BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Ray Nelson passed for 300 yards,
including a 74-yard touchdown pass to Efrem Hill on the first play
of a 20-17 victory over Tennessee Tech on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (4-5, 3-3 Ohio Valley Conference) led 20-3 midway
through the third quarter and held on for their third straight win
since snapping a five-game losing streak.
Robert Craft threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to
lead Tennessee Tech (5-3, 2-2) back. He hit Antonio Minor for a
9-yarder and followed with a 12-yarder to Brent McNeal with 8:20
Tennessee Tech again drove to the Samford 25-yard line late in
the fourth quarter, but a fumble ended the threat.
Hill caught six passes for 163 yards to became Samford's alltime
leading receiver, raising his total to 2,998 yards. Nelson scored
on a 2-yard run as Samford led 17-0 after the first quarter.
Craft was 25-of-38 passing for 238 yards but was intercepted
Freshman placekicker Shannon Fleming made field goals of 45 and
42 yards, the first of his Samford career.
