BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Ray Nelson passed for 300 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown pass to Efrem Hill on the first play of a 20-17 victory over Tennessee Tech on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (4-5, 3-3 Ohio Valley Conference) led 20-3 midway through the third quarter and held on for their third straight win since snapping a five-game losing streak.

Robert Craft threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to lead Tennessee Tech (5-3, 2-2) back. He hit Antonio Minor for a 9-yarder and followed with a 12-yarder to Brent McNeal with 8:20 left.

Tennessee Tech again drove to the Samford 25-yard line late in the fourth quarter, but a fumble ended the threat.

Hill caught six passes for 163 yards to became Samford's alltime leading receiver, raising his total to 2,998 yards. Nelson scored on a 2-yard run as Samford led 17-0 after the first quarter.

Craft was 25-of-38 passing for 238 yards but was intercepted twice.

Freshman placekicker Shannon Fleming made field goals of 45 and 42 yards, the first of his Samford career.
