BOONE, N.C. (AP) -- DaVon Fowlkes caught 17 passes for 280 yards
and three quick touchdowns Saturday as Appalachian State ran away
from Elon 48-7.
Fowlkes entered the game as the nation's leading receiver in
Division I-AA with 9 catches and 142.4 yards per game. Appalachian
State (2-7, 1-5 Southern Conference) entered the game fifth in the
nation in passing offense. The Mountaineers rolled up 475 yards
through the air and added 153 yards rushing.
Richie Williams hit Fowlkes for a 5-yard touchdown pass midway
through the first quarter to open the scoring.
Williams, who finished 29-for-43 and 408 yards, then hit Fowlkes
with TD passes of 54- and 61 yards.
After a pair of Julian Rauch field goals gave Appalachian State
a 27-0 halftime lead, Williams scored on a 23-yard touchdown run.
Williams' replacement, Trey Elder, then added a 9-yard scoring
run. Elder finished 7-for-10 with 67 yards and one interception.
Elon's Ronnie Dargan put the Phoenix (6-4, 4-2) on the
scoreboard with 2:55 left on a 1-yard run that capped a 12-play,
80-yard drive. Dargan ran for 105 yards on 20 carries.
The Mountaineers responded 55 seconds later with a 5-yard
Michael Metcalf touchdown run.
