THIBODAUX, La. (AP) -- Colt Colletti ran for 120 yards and a
touchdown as Nicholls State used a strong ground game to overcome
Stephen F. Austin 41-23 on Saturday.
The Colonels scored on five runs, two of them by quarterback
Yale Vannoy, and racked up 401 total rushing yards and only 18
total passing yards. It was the first back-to-back win for Nicholls
(5-3, 2-1 Southland Conference) this season.
Lavinco Brown returned the opening kickoff 95 yards to open up
the scoring for Nicholls.
In the second quarter, Vannoy ran in his first touchdown, a
3-yarder, to make it 14-0.
The Lumberjacks (5-4, 0-3) got on the scoreboard when Keldrick
Holman picked up a fumble and returned it 54 yards for the
touchdown with 7:57 left before the halftime.
Colletti scored on a 30-yard run to give Nicholls a 20-7 lead.
The Lumberjacks cut the deficit to 20-10 going into the halftime
when Ryan Rossner hit a 35-yard field goal.
In the second half, David Plaisance scored on a 17-yard run with
7:50 left in the third quarter. The Lumberjacks answered with a
51-yard TD pass from Michael Williams to Ron Middleton to cut the
deficit to 27-17.
In the fourth quarter, the Colonels scored two more rushing
touchdowns -- a 3-yarder by Vannoy and a 2-yarder by Broderick Cole
-- to put the game away.
Middleton scored on a 1-yard run for the Lumberjacks, who were
hurt by four turnovers, which Nicholls converted into 21 points.
Middleton was the main spark for the Lumberjack's offense with 148
yards of total offense.
