Northwestern St. 44, Texas State 7

NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP) -- Davon Vinson threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns as Northwestern State, bolstered by its powerful defense, cruised to a 44-7 win over Texas State on Saturday to remain undefeated at home this season.

The Demons (6-3, 2-1 Southland Conference) allowed Texas State only nine first downs and 169 total offense yards -- 89 rushing and 80 passing. The Bobcats (4-5, 2-1) had possession of the ball for only about 19 minutes during the game.

Vinson found Derrick Doyle for an 8-yard touchdown pass with 9:06 left in the first quarter to get the Demons on the board first. Derrick Johnese then scored on a 3-yard run and Tommy Hebert tacked on a 28-yard field goal to give Northwestern at 17-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

John Tyson caught a 15-yard pass from Chase Wasson to score the Bobcats' only touchdown about 30 seconds into the second quarter.

But Vinson answered with a 6-yard TD run to make it 24-7. Shelton Sampson got into the end zone on an 8-yard run and Doyle caught his second TD pass -- a 30-yarder -- to make it 38-7 for the Demons at halftime.

In the third quarter, Demoine Clark scored on a 4-yard run.

Vinson completed 13 of 21 passes and he was intercepted once. Wasson connected on 4 of 11 passes for 59 yards and one interception.

With the win, Northwestern ended a two-game losing skid and are 5-0 at home.
