NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP) -- Davon Vinson threw for 206 yards and
two touchdowns as Northwestern State, bolstered by its powerful
defense, cruised to a 44-7 win over Texas State on Saturday to
remain undefeated at home this season.
The Demons (6-3, 2-1 Southland Conference) allowed Texas State
only nine first downs and 169 total offense yards -- 89 rushing and
80 passing. The Bobcats (4-5, 2-1) had possession of the ball for
only about 19 minutes during the game.
Vinson found Derrick Doyle for an 8-yard touchdown pass with
9:06 left in the first quarter to get the Demons on the board
first. Derrick Johnese then scored on a 3-yard run and Tommy Hebert
tacked on a 28-yard field goal to give Northwestern at 17-0 lead at
the end of the first quarter.
John Tyson caught a 15-yard pass from Chase Wasson to score the
Bobcats' only touchdown about 30 seconds into the second quarter.
But Vinson answered with a 6-yard TD run to make it 24-7.
Shelton Sampson got into the end zone on an 8-yard run and Doyle
caught his second TD pass -- a 30-yarder -- to make it 38-7 for the
Demons at halftime.
In the third quarter, Demoine Clark scored on a 4-yard run.
Vinson completed 13 of 21 passes and he was intercepted once.
