PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Joe Rubin rushed for 155 yards and two
touchdowns to lead Portland State to a 42-21 victory over Idaho
State on Saturday.
Joe Wiser added 235 yards passing and threw for two scores.
Rubin had two short TD runs as Portland State jumped to a 21-0
lead midway through the third quarter. The Vikings (5-4, 3-3 Big
Sky Conference) pushed the lead to 28-0 early in the fourth quarter
when Steve Shinen intercepted a Matt Hagler pass and returned it 82
yards for a touchdown. At that point, the Bengals looked like they
were candidates to suffer their first shutout in this series since
a 47-0 loss in 1977.
But Idaho State (2-7, 1-5) rallied when Kris Krosch intercepted
a pass deep in Portland State territory. On the next play, the
Bengals ran a flea-flicker with receiver Jeff Davenport hitting a
wide-open Sale' Key for a 29-yard touchdown.
Idaho State then went for an onside kick, which was recovered by
the Bengals' David Beverly. That led to another Bengal touchdown,
with Davenport on the receiving end of a 12-yard pass from
quarterback Mark Hetherington with 9:50 left.
The Bengals attempted another onside kick, but the Vikings
recovered. Two minutes later, the Vikings added some cushion with
12-yard touchdown pass from Wiser to Shaun Bodiford.
The Bengals, who threw 79 times, outgained the Vikings 518 yards
Hagler, who entered the game as Hetherington's backup, completed
21 of 42 passes for 251 yards. He threw three interceptions.
Hetherington went 21 of 36 for 185 yards with one interception.
