LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Texas Tech coach Mike Leach saw two football games in Saturday's 42-17 win over Baylor.
There was the mistake-filled first half. Then there was the dominant second half.
"I'm very disappointed with the first half, pleased with the second, so it's kind of a love-hate game really," Leach said. "I think we need to learn from the first half and build on the second half."
Sonny Cumbie threw for 397 yards and five touchdowns but had trouble finding time in the first half because of a stout Baylor rush. Tech led just 14-10 at halftime on a late score.
But Cumbie, who led the nation in passing entering the game, threw two TD passes in the third quarter as Tech (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) broke open the game. Cumbie threw two 11-yard scoring passes and also added TD throws of 3, 16 and 57 yards.
Baylor (3-6, 1-5), coming off an upset of Texas A&M last week, failed to win its first Big 12 road game and pick up its first consecutive conference wins. The Bears have lost 35 straight Big 12 road games.
"I didn't see the same football team that was on the field last week. I don't think we played with a lot of energy or emotion," Baylor coach Guy Morriss said. "Our offense shifted into neutral and we couldn't get anything going."
Tech led 14-10 at the break after Cumbie's 3-yard TD pass to Trey Haverty as time ran out. Cumbie had a season-low 132 passing yards in the first half and was sacked four times.
"The first half, Baylor's three defensive linemen consistently whipped our five offensive linemen," Leach said.
Leach called the offense to the sidelines a couple times in the first half. At halftime, he continued his tongue lashing.
"It was pretty intense," Tech linebacker Mike Smith said. "It was a close game, and the coaches were into it. We fixed what we needed to fix to win the game."
Cumbie faulted execution in the first half.
"We didn't start with the mentality we needed to," said Cumbie, who finished with 37-of-48 completions and one interception. "We didn't come out and play hard."
The Red Raiders scored on their only drives of the third quarter as Cumbie found Danny Amendola for a 16-yard TD pass and Haverty on a 57-yarder, extending Tech's lead to 28-10.
Haverty finished with 11 receptions and 158 yards, both career highs.
Cumbie threw five TD passes for the second time this season. He also did it in a 70-10 win over Nebraska last month.
Baylor tried to get back into it with a fake punt, but failed to pick up a first down. Cumbie then threw his fourth touchdown pass, an 11-yarder to Jarrett Hicks to give the Red Raiders a 35-10 lead.
Tech earned 236 yards on those three scoring drives, while Baylor managed just 21 yards in the span.
"Our players got tired," Baylor tailback Anthony Krieg said. "In the second half we didn't put any drives together and that kept our defense on the field."
Taurean Henderson ran for 81 yards on eight carries and one touchdown in the first half for Tech. He finished with 111 yards on 16 carries.
The Bears led twice, the first time coming after they scored on their first possession to take a 7-0 lead.
Trent Shelton took a lateral pass from Shawn Bell on a third-and-1 from the Baylor 29. Shelton hugged the sideline before cutting across the field and scampering into the end zone. The 79-yard play was Baylor's longest of the season.
