Valparaiso 31, Butler 26

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) -- Jeff Horton ran for 211 yards including two long touchdowns in the second half to lead Valparaiso to a 31-26 win over Butler on Saturday.

Horton scored a TD on a 63-yard run with about two minutes left in the third. Then, on the next Butler drive, Brad Smeja intercepted an Ian Nelson pass and returned it to the Butler 36-yard line.

On the next play, Horton ran for his second score to put Valparaiso (4-6, 1-3 Pioneer League) ahead 31-20.

Butler (1-9, 0-4) then mounted a 13-play, 78-yard drive to bring the score to 31-26 with 8:40 left in the game. But that ended the scoring.

Nelson completed 17-of-28 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns, but was intercepted twice. One of his main targets was Phil Vorndran, who had four catches for 45 yards and two touchdowns. His third was to Billy Nardini for 11 yards to start the game's scoring.

Nelson also ran for a 2-yard touchdown early in the third quarter.

Valparaiso's Ryan Doerffler was 7-of-18 passing for 141 yards. But he made the passes count with touchdowns of 9 yards to Joe Blahowicz and 39 yards to Kevin Knutson, both in the second quarter, to put Valparaiso ahead 17-7 at halftime.

Doerffler also did not throw and interception.
