EASTON, Pa. (AP) -- Joe McCourt rushed for 156 yards and tied a
school record with five touchdowns to lead Lafayette to a 56-20
victory over Holy Cross on Saturday.
McCourt became the Patriot League's all-time leading scorer with
314 points, and Lafayette (7-3, 4-1 Patriot League) rolled up the
highest point total in a single game since a 54-20 win over Lehigh
Midway through the third quarter, a 35-yard touchdown pass by
John O'Neil to Sean Gruber pulled Holy Cross (2-8, 0-5) within
28-20, but the extra point was blocked and Blake Costanzo returned
the loose ball 91 yards for two points. McCourt scored on a pair of
4-yard runs and a 1-yard run after that to put the game out of
Brad Maurer, who was 14-of-19 for 163 yards and ran 12 times for
96 yards, ran 28 yards for one score to cap a 77-yard drive and
McCourt had a 2-yard TD run to give Lafayette a 14-0 lead at the
end of the first quarter.
McCourt had a 12-yard score in the second quarter, but Steven
Silva scored on a 1-yard run before that and O'Neil hit Luke Dugan
with a 9-yard TD pass to pull within 21-14 at halftime.
Lafayette scored again on the opening drive of the second half
as Maurer threw an 18-yard pass to David Nelson to cap a 69-yard
drive. The Leopards capped the scoring with Jonathan Hurt's 5-yard
touchdown run in the last two minutes.
