MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) -- Freshman Scott Phaydavong rushed for 178
yards and scored a touchdown as Drake beat Morehead State 20-17 to
win the Pioneer Football League championship Saturday.
Phaydavong had an 82-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs
(10-2) ahead 7-0 with 8:20 left in the first quarter. His rushing
total was a record for the Pioneer League championship game.
A field goal by Tyler McGlade late in the third quarter extended
Drake's lead to 20-3.
Drake would need all of those points against Morehead (6-6).
Eagles quarterback Tyler Cvitkovic threw a pair of fourth quarter
touchdowns. He connected on a 9-yard pass to Jabarbi McGee with
4:10 left and a 14-yard pass to Tyler Slone with 28 seconds left.
After the scoring pass to Slone, Dana Calhoun caught the 2-point
conversion to get Morehead State to make it 20-17.
But Drake recovered an onside kick and ran off the clock to seal
The Bulldogs had 222 rushing yards and 157 yards passing while
the Eagles had a season-high 340 passing yards but managed just 71
yards on the ground.
Cvitkovic finished 26 of 45 for 340 yards and two scores and one
Phaydavong has rushed for 1,539 yards this season and leads all
freshman running backs at the NCAA 1-AA level.
It was Morehead State's third straight loss in the Pioneer
League championship game.
