McNeese State 30, Nicholls State 9

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) -- Chris Thomas ran for three touchdowns and 117 yards and Scott Pendarvis threw for 242 yards to lift McNeese State to a 30-9 win over Nicholls State on Saturday.

Nicholls got on the board first with a 29-yard field by Jay Jones less than 5 minutes into the first quarter. John Marino answered with a 37-yard field goal to tie the game at 3 with 10 seconds left in the first.

In the second quarter, Thomas scored on a 1-yard run with 6:31 left before the halftime to give the Cowboys a 10-3 lead. The touchdown was set up when Yale Vannoy fumbled at the Colonels' 25.

The half ended with Cory Vavala recovering a McNeese fumble at its own 20-yard line to thwart a Cowboy threat.

Thomas scored on a 4-yard run early in the third quarter, capping off a 65-yard drive highlighted by a 41-yard Carlese Franklin reception on a second-and-7 play.

Thomas scored on a 6-yard run midway through the quarter to make it 23-3 for McNeese.

Yale Vannoy scored on a 2-yard run for Nicholls with 18 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 23-9.

Kris Bush rounded out the scoring with a 1-yard TD run for McNeese (4-7, 1-4 Southland Conference).

Scott Pendarvis completed 24 of 27 passes and no interceptions for McNeese.

Yale Vannoy hit 3 of 12 passes for 25 yards for Nicholls (5-5, 2-3).

The Cowboys, who were allowing 41.4 points per game heading into the game, outgained the Colonels 418-231 in total offensive yards.
