Bulldogs set NCAA record with 2 TDs in 8 seconds

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Paul Pinegar threw three touchdown passes and Fresno State set an NCAA record by scoring two touchdowns in an 8-second span in its 62-28 victory over San Jose State on Saturday.

Bryson Sumlin scored three touchdowns for the Bulldogs (8-3, 5-3 Western Athletic Conference), who won their fifth straight. Fresno State has outscored its opponents by 280-80 during the streak and has surpassed 50 points for the fourth straight game for the first time in school history.

Lance Martin rushed for 162 yards and scored two touchdown as the Spartans (2-9, 1-7) lost their seventh straight.

The loss also spoiled the final game for Spartans coach Fitz Hill, who stepped down from the post earlier in the week. He finished with a 14-33 record in four years.

Pinegar was 12-of-19 for 228 yards. He has 18 touchdown passes this season.

After Wendell Mathias scored on 2-yard run with 13:21 left in the half to make it 21-7, Jaron Fairman recovered an onside kick on the Spartans' 33. Stephen Spach caught Pinegar's pass on the next play to make it 28-7 at 13:13.

Utah had the previous record with two scores in 10 seconds against Air Force in 1995.

On the first play from scrimmage, Fresno State strong safety James Sanders sacked Adam Tafralis, forced a fumble and recovered it on the Spartans' 3. Sumlin raced into the end zone on the Bulldogs' first offensive play to give them a 7-0 edge 17 seconds into the game.

The Spartans tied the score at 7l when Josh Williamson caught a 29-yard pass from Dale Rogers with 12:20 left in the first quarter, but it was all Bulldogs after that.

Roshon Vercher scored on a 7-yard run and Jermaine Jamison caught a seven-yard scoring toss from Pinegar to make it 41-14 at half.

San Jose State blocked Brett Visintainer's PAT try on the Verher touchdown, ending the NCAA Division I's longest current PAT streak at 148. Fresno State hadn't missed a PAT since the 2001 season.
